South County Museum History

The South County Museum has been dedicated to showcasing the heritage of Rhode Island since 1933. The site on which it stands bears a rich tapestry of history that dates back to 1000 AD when the Narragansett people used the area for agricultural, hunting, and fishing purposes. The land, now known as Canonchet Farm, was purchased by Thomas Mumford in the Pettaquamscutt Purchase in 1658. Through the years, it passed through several hands, including Deputy Governor of the Rhode Island colony, William Robinson, in 1741.

John Thompson acquired the land from Attmore Robinson in 1852, which would later be purchased by Governor Sprague and his wife Kate Chase in 1864. The Spragues named the land “Canonchet,” after the Narragansett sachem. Their construction of a 64-room mansion on the site was a grand endeavor that took six years and $1,000,000—a sum equivalent to $14,000,000 today—to complete. Unfortunately, this magnificent home met a tragic end when it burned to the ground in 1909.

The South County Museum was established in 1933 in Wickford and moved to its current location in Narragansett in 1985. It operates from April to October, dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and culture of Rhode Island. Consider donating to the museum to help sustain its efforts in keeping our history vibrant and alive.
