Where to Ride a Bike in Narragansett

There are so many beautiful Narragansett parks for you to hike through and explore when you stay at a Narragansett vacation rental. Here are some of the best national parks for you to bike through!

Arcadia Management Area

Arcadia has over 14,000 acres of forest for you to explore, making this Rhode Island’s largest recreational area. You get the best opportunity to enjoy the outdoors when you bike through Arcadia. There are many miles of gravel roads where you can take a gravel bike out on the trail or hit one of the well-maintained trails along the way. No matter how long you plan on staying, there will always be a different path for you to explore. There is a parking lot designated for mountain bikers that give all bikers an easy way to hit the trail right away. It is important to know that the horseback riders also use the same paths as the bike paths.

Quonset Bike Path

Built by the RIDOT, the Quonset/Davisville Bike path is a perfect trail for adventurous bikers. The bike path hugs the Quonset Business parks and extends 3.7 miles through the Calf Pasture Point nature area. Your trail ends at the Mt. View neighborhood of North Kingstown. While the path hugs the Business Park, the bikeway is off-road. This path is an asset to workers, residents, and any bikers looking for a short ride through Rhode Island.

The William C. O’Neill Bike Path

Located in South County, the William C. O’Neill Bike Path is the premier bike path in New England. Many in the area still call this path the South Country Bike Path. The path is a 7-mile trail, with extensions being made to make it a total of 8 miles. The trail begins at the Kingston Train station. It follows through the old Narragansett Pier Railroad. It then follows through several villages, including Peace Dale, Wakefield, and Narragansett. The trail ends at the Narragansett town beach. The trail consists of gentle hills in the middle of the trail between Kingston Station and Peace Dale. From Peace Dale to Wakefield, you’ll experience moderate ups and downs. There is a switchback trail built where the old trestle used to be. Make sure to use caution when biking the switchback.

Rules for Riding Near Narragansett

Just like your car and the road, biking and bike paths have rules as well. It’s important to follow them when you go out on your bike trails. The RI Bicycle Coalition has laid out very easy rules for all bikers to follow. If you are driving on the road with cars, constantly check behind you to make sure that you can change lanes. Ride as if you were invisible but do not act like you are invisible. It is best to share the road and respect drivers and other bikers.

If possible, wear bright colors. This will help a driver be able to see you on the road. Make sure you wear a helmet at all times! Even on smooth roads, there can be debris and potholes that can be hazardous to you and your ride.

When you bike the trails, there are also some roles to follow. Remember that the Bike Paths are open for the public from dawn until dusk. So, you will be sharing the road with joggers, walkers, skaters, and even horseback riders. Make sure you obey all traffic signs and rules as well. Make sure you’re riding on the right in a single file line and using the proper hand signals when turning and stopping. You can also be sure to use verbal communication to make sure others know of your intentions. As with any form of biking, make sure you wear protective equipment like a helmet or even knee and elbow pads to protect yourself from falls.
