Here is our quick guide to get you started when planning your next romantic vacation to Narragansett.

Weather and What to Pack

Since Rhode Island is located in New England, it’s no question that February is quite a cold season. However, that certainly won’t stop you from having an incredible romantic vacation with your partner! Typically, February is the coldest month that Narragansett experiences, with average lows in the 20s and average highs in the mid-40s. Luckily, though, February has some of the lowest precipitation chances of the year, so you don’t have to worry about your plans getting ruined because of rain or snow.

As far as what to pack, you’ll definitely want to bring your heavy coat and some sturdy shoes to tackle the terrain no matter where you go. We’d also recommend layering with long sleeve shirts; that way, you can take your coat off at an indoor attraction and still be comfortable in any conditions. You might also appreciate having gloves or mittens, heavy socks, and waterproof boots.

Activities

Even though Narragansett can get quite cold in February, it’s the perfect time to explore the beautiful nature the area. One of the best ways to do that? Embarking on a Newport seal tour with Save The Bay! You and your partner will hop onto an education vessel that will take you through historic Newport Harbor, where your experienced captain will fill you in on all the interesting history of the area. You might even get the chance to see some majestic seals over at Citing Rock! After all, the harbor seal is the Rhode Island state mammal, so you don’t want to miss out on your chance to see one in its natural habitat!

You can also make your way about 40 minutes north into the town of Bristol to experience Blithewold Mansion. This incredible home was the property of Augustus and Bessie Van Winkle from 1894 until 1976 and offers an absolutely stunning estate and gardens for visitors to explore. There’s nothing more romantic than wandering the grounds and taking pictures in front of the snow-covered house or heading inside to witness the beautiful furnishings and artifacts. This is an especially great activity for couples who love history.

If you and your partner want something exciting to give you an adrenaline rush, head about 40 minutes away into downtown Providence to the Bank Newport City Center, where you’ll find the Providence Rink. Here, you have the opportunity to participate in ice skating and even ice bumper cars! If you want to try ice skating but aren’t too experienced, you can participate in a group lesson and even grab a free safety helmet to protect yourself. As far as ice bumper cars, this is a truly one-of-a-kind experience that will have you and your partner laughing together and making unforgettable memories.

Events

In addition to the area’s permanent activities, there are tons of fun annual events that only add to the best things to do in Narragansett. Narragansett and surrounding towns put a big focus on flea markets and farmers’ markets during this time of year, which is perfect for you and your sweetheart to be able to pick out a unique souvenir!  For instance, the Farm Fresh Winter Market in Providence happens every Sunday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. There are a wide range of local vendors that attend and offer up everything from coffee and fresh produce to snacks, soaps, spa products, and so much more!

A similar event in Providence is the Providence Flea at the Farm Fresh RI Market Hall. This community market was established in 2013 and allows visitors to come out every Sunday and talk to local vendors and artisans, enjoy delicious cuisine from the food trucks, support community nonprofits, and jam out to the live music.

Searching for something casual? Head to Revival Brewing in Providence for their Garage Market, on February 13th and 14th as well as a few other weekends throughout the month. At this event, you’ll be able to find all kinds of local craft beer and cocktail options, as well as fresh food and amazing live music. There are even some craft vendors available for you to check out!

No romantic Valentine’s Day getaway would be complete without a delectable dinner! If you don’t want to leave Narragansett to get a mouthwatering meal, just head to Coast Guard House. This restaurant is located in a former US Coast Guard Station and has been serving the locals and visitors of Narragansett since the 1940s. You can dine on fresh seafood from the raw bar or go for a full-scale seafood entree, in addition to their plentiful land and pasta varieties. Be sure to ask the wait staff for their recommendation off the expansive wine list, then simply sit back and enjoy a great meal with your loved one while you stare out at the unmatched view of Narragansett Bay.

Looking for a meal with a bit of spice? Head to Pawtucket to experience the regional Cuisines of India at Rasoi. They will be serving their Valentine’s menu from February 12th through 14th, perfect for a romantic evening out with your sweetheart. Choose from a starter like dhokla or chili garlic shrimp before moving onto a main course like lamb stew or jackfruit and beetroot kofta. You can also pair your meal with fresh baked naan and finish off with the delicious rose rasmalai for dessert! Choose your menu options independently or make it a prix fixe menu for two.

Finally, if you’re simply looking to satisfy your sweet tooth or get dessert after your meal, Pastiche in Providence is the place to go. This European-style cafe serves the most delicious selection of cakes, tarts, cookies, chocolate, and so much more. Grab a brownie or cannoli for yourself or pick up a vanilla bean cheesecake or All-American chocolate cake to take back to your rental with you!
