Plan A Memorial Day Weekend Vacation to Narragansett, Rhode Island

As spring turns to summer, the days become longer and the weather gets warmer – perfect conditions for a trip to Narragansett, Rhode Island. Weather & What to Pack

By the end of May, the weather is usually very pleasant, though at times can be somewhat unpredictable. There may be rain or shine or a combination of them both! Temperatures range from lows of 48 degrees to highs of 78. That said, it’s good to be prepared. Bring layers so you can strip down when it’s hot and bundle up when it gets chilly. And don’t forget the rain gear! 

Though the weather can be inconsistent at times, Narragansett gets plenty of sun in May. So, don’t fret – you’ll almost certainly get an opportunity to visit the beach! 

Activities

Year-round, there are plenty of activities to fill your days and keep the whole family entertained. 

Take a day trip to Block Island by ferry. Located 12 miles off the Rhode Island coast, this seaside gem is renowned for its charming Victorian architecture, beaches, hiking trails, and historic lighthouses. Spend a day exploring its natural beauty or wandering through the town and its quaint shops. 

Naragansett Ferry

Historic Newport is another worthwhile day trip. Complete the Cliff Walk, visit the Newport Art Museum, or visit one of many local cafes, clubs, and bars to meet locals and have a good time. During Memorial Day Weekend, various harbor cruises – Brunch on a Boat, Dine & Sail, and Ride the Rails – provide great opportunities to kick back and relax.

In Narragansett proper, you can spend a romantic evening wandering the Port of Galilee or enjoy a sunset at Point Judith Lighthouse. Black Point is a great hiking destination where the kids will enjoy hunting for crabs and other sea life in tidal ponds. Narragansett also has great surfing opportunities. Events

The Gaspee Arts and Crafts Festival is an annual Memorial Day Weekend tradition near Narragansett in Warwick, Rhode Island. The event is family-friendly and free, with the best of shopping, music, and food. Over 100 artisans, community groups, and non-profits are present. Drop by between 10 a.m. -5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

In Newport, pay a visit to Fort Adams State Park for the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial. During the ceremony, 7,000 boots adorned with flags and name placards will be presented to honor troops killed in action post-9/11.

Enjoy plenty of parades and parties over the long weekend, in honor of American troops and to welcome the summer season. 

Where to Eat

The Monday of Memorial Day Weekend is an official state holiday, which in Rhode Island means all city and town offices, libraries, banks, and post offices will be closed. Most shops remain open, though it’s always best to call in advance! 

Favorite local restaurants include Trio, Crazy Burger Café and Juice, Coast Guard House, and Spain of Narragansett. Don’t forget to visit the Gaspee Arts and Crafts Festival, which includes many food stands!
