Narragansett Beer is one of the town’s main claims to fame. Known for its cheery, catchy slogan, “Hi Neighbor, have a ‘Gansett!,” The Narragansett Brewing Company produces a range of beers that are known all over the country. Its most famous beers are the classic IPAs. It is now one of the top 50 breweries in the U.S.

History

The brewery dates back to the 1890s. Six local businessmen known as “The Original Six” joined forces to create the Narragansett Brewing Company. A large brick brewing house was built. Within a year, the company was producing upwards of 28,000 barrels of beer a year.

By 1914, the company was the largest beer brewer in New England. However, in the 1920s, prohibition took a toll on the company.

Luckily, famous beer mogul Rudolf Haffenreffer Jr. took on the company and helped it to survive in the decades that followed the prohibition era.

At the end of World War II, the company launched its legendary marketing campaign, with the memorably slogan, “Hi Neighbor! Have a ‘Gansett.” The company also secured a sponsorship with the Boston Braves and, later, the Boston Red Sox. Curt Gowdy, the announcer of the Red Sox, eventually became an iconic spokesman of the beer.

Since these years, the company has gone through ups and down. The 1970s and 80s were tough on the company. Eventually, the brewery was shut down in the 90s.

Today, a new brewery stands in Rochester. Last year, plans were announced for a new brewery to be built in Providence, RI, bringing the company back to the state where it began its journey.

The original grounds of the brewing company once held a barn, a stable, a blacksmith, gas-powered and electric trucks, 25 train cars, and an ice plant. It was practically the size of a small town!
The beer was featured in the 1975 classic Jaws in a famous scene in which the character Quint crushes the can. Narragansett Beer Company now celebrates National Crush a Can Day in honor of the iconic moment.
The famous children’s author Dr. Seuss is responsible for the illustrations in the first ads.
The beer is still made from the original brewing recipe.
