Whalers Brewing Company

Since 2011, Josh Dunlap and Wes Staschke have been proudly brewing, canning, and kegging their offerings on-site at their scenic Palisades Mill campus. They started the brewery while in college and have since continued to perfect their craft.

They aim to keep flagship and seasonal offerings always on tap, but the rest of their lines in the taproom are rotated on a weekly basis. Examples of their product include Rise, with a bright citrus aroma; East Coast IPA, that delivers an upfront floral aroma; Olneyville Megazord, which starts with a semi-sweet chocolate aroma and has a clean, bitter cascade finish.

Take the Brewery Pilgrimage to see what Whalers does in person! A trip to the brewery involves lots of samples and an explanation of how your drinks are made. Kids (before 6 p.m.) and dogs (on-leash, well-behaved) are welcome to attend, and feel free to bring your own food!

Visit Whalers at 1174 Kingston Road. Opening hours are from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday; 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday; 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday; and 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Shaidzon Beer Co.

This creatively named brewery is run by partners Chip and Josh. After unsuccessfully coming up with a unique name for their business, they chose one at random to fill out the paperwork. It ended up sticking!

Their beers are internationally inspired but brewed locally. Some of their signature selections include concoctions like Buffalo Czech/Pilsner, Flaked & Baked/Imperial Oatmeal Stout, Kolsch, Gino Time/American Dry Stout, and Vienna Lager, among others. You can try a freshly brewed batch at the Shaidzon tasting room/beer garden. You must be 21+ to purchase beers, but there are games and books for children on-site as well.

Things are constantly happening on-site, so check out the online events calendar to plan your visit. Their calendar also alerts you to new batches that the brewery will be whipping up for tasting!

Visit Shaidzon at 141 Fairgrounds Road. Pickups and visiting the tasting room are possible Wednesday through Sunday. Hours vary throughout the week.

Tilted Barn Brewery

Since 2014, this family-run brewery has been cranking out excellent beer. They are inspired by a passion to cram as many hops into each batch of beer as humanly possible. While brewing beer, they have maintained their traditional family farm, so the brewery is located on a beautiful countryside residence with horses and other animals. They are proud to be Rhode Island’s first farm brewery, and a visit to their site is a great opportunity to get off the beaten track.

Beers-to-go currently available in the tasting room includes Bleeding Heart, Cactus, Exeter, Lawn Boy, Libby, Hold Your Head Up, among others. There are farmhouse ales, sour-fruited goses, and New England/American-style beers. In addition to satisfying your thirst, the brewery connects with local food trucks and invites them to sell food nearby, so you can grab a bite to eat while visiting the tasting room.

You can visit this farm brewery at One Hemsley Place in Exeter. Currently, they are open Thursdays 12-8, Fridays 12-8, Saturdays 12-8, and Sundays 12-5. Reservations are not accepted, so it is first come, first serve!

West Passage Brewing

Born out of a desire to share quality artisan-brewed beer with the local community, West Passage Brewing Company is a great place to enjoy diverse, locally crafted beers and great food in an environment that is welcoming to all.

Beers are crafted to perfection and include names like C-Zik Pills, an American craft pilsner; Fully Body Wag, a pub-style beer with distinct citrus aroma; and Accidental Red Lager with a Vienna base malt. These are just a few of the distinct flavors you will find at West Passage!

While you can visit for a craft-beer tasting, many other food and drink options are available. If you’re in the mood for another fermented drink, select from quality wines and cocktails. West Passage’s restaurant also includes full meal options like chicken pot pie, baked Mac & Cheese, street tacos, sandwiches, and burgers. Top that off with a sweet piece of chocolate cake or fried banana cheesecake!

You can visit West Passage Brewing at 7835 Post Road in North Kingston. Opening hours are Monday 5-11 p.m.; Wednesday & Thursday from 4-10 p.m.; Friday from 3-10 p.m.; Saturday from 11:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.; and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The General’s Crossing Brewhouse

Over 200 years ago, General George Washington crossed Conanicut Island to meet with the French and plan the final battles of the Revolution; this is how the brewery gets its name! Located in the beautiful heart of Jamestown, The General’s Crossing is the second smallest in the state of Rhode Island and features the freshest beer you can hope to find. Beer is served straight from the brite tank, just five feet away from where it was brewed. The brewery specializes in styles and flavorings that can’t be found everywhere, and four-to-six seasonally appropriate beers are on tap at all times.

What’s on tap is constantly changing, but examples of their products include Scottish Export, West Coast IPA, Belgian Blond, Honey Hibiscus Wit, and Munich Madness Oktoberfest. You can drop by all year round to sample these fresh brews, and you can even come back multiple times in the year for entirely different experiences.

Visit The General’s Crossing at 34 Narragansett Avenue in Jamestown. Their hours are Monday and Wednesday through Friday 4-8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 2-8 p.m.
