Best Fishing Seasons

In Narragansett, there are a few fishing seasons when you will be more likely to catch certain types and species of fish.

January, February, and March- In Rhode Island, there isn’t much fishing during these winter months. However, you may be lucky to find some codfish at this time of year.

April – This month marks the beginning of the recreational Tautog season. You will need a special license to fish for this species.

May – By may, Tautog season is in full swing, and dozens of anglers head to Narragansett Bay to catch up to 50 a day.

June – Striper fishing becomes popular during this hotter time of year. Scup and sea bass are also plentiful during this time of year. You’ll also see more and more flounder fishing in June.

July and August – As the summer gets hotter, the waters continue to get busier. Bass, flounder, bluefish, and Tautog fishing are all popular during this time. 

September and October – Cooler water and a lower sun result in more surface acting with strippers and blues.

November and December – A good month for Tautog fishing, however, you may experience some bad weather for fishing during this time.

Fishing License

In Rhode Island, it’s compulsory that you have a RI Recreational Saltwater Fishing License, a National Saltwater Angler Registration, or a recreational saltwater fishing license from a reciprocal state (New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Maine). 

It’s easy to buy a license if you head to this page. You can also purchase a fishing license at some of the bait and tackle shops in Rhode Island, once you arrive. The license is $7 for RI residents and $10 for non-residents. You can also buy a temporary week-long license for $5.
